Traveling with your furry friend can be a rewarding experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. If you're planning to take your small dog on an air travel adventure, here are some tips and tricks to ensure a smooth journey for both you and your pet.
Choose the Right Carrier
Make sure to select a carrier that is airline-approved and provides enough space for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. It's also a good idea to familiarize your dog with the carrier before the trip to reduce anxiety. Fika and I use Mr. Peanuts TSA approved carrier.
Call Your Vet
Prior to your trip, make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations and is healthy enough for travel. If there's any doubt, make an appointment with your vet. There are some conditions that could be dangerous for your dog to fly with, so best to confirm with those who know best before you travel.
Plan Ahead
Research the airline's pet policy and make sure to book your dog's ticket in advance. Some airlines have restrictions on the number of pets allowed in the cabin, so it's important to secure your spot early. You should also ask about how much it will cost and how many bags you are allowed to have in the cabin in addition to your pup in its carrier. You don't want to be surprised and have to check a bag at the gate!
Keep Your Dog Comfortable
Bring along familiar items such as your dog's favorite blanket or toy to help them feel more at ease during the flight. Fika and I always travel with one of her Freaky Friends and a chew toy. It's also a good idea to pack some treats and a collapsible water bowl to keep your dog hydrated.
Show up Early
Even if you aren't checking a bag, you will need to check in your dog at the check in counter. Sometimes lines can get long and it will take more time than you anticipated. To avoid stress, show up two hours before your flight. This will also give you extra time to visit an animal relief station or go on a nice stroll with your dog before the flight to keep them calm during the entire journey.
Stay Calm and Positive
Dogs are very intuitive and can pick up on their owner's emotions. Try to remain calm and positive throughout the journey to help your dog feel more relaxed. A soothing voice and gentle petting and generous treating can go a long way in keeping your furry friend at ease.
By following these tips and tricks, you can ensure a smooth air travel experience with your small dog. Remember to always prioritize your pet's comfort and well-being, and enjoy the adventure together!
